Now that there's been time for the dust to settle and many of these apps have been upgraded, we thought it was time to revisit some of the more popular ones.

It is a full featured marine charting app capable of helping you navigate rivers, lake and coastal waters almost anywhere in the world. The iSailor app is touted as an easy to use charting system for amateur boater. It has the basic features of a GPS navigation and charting program but comes up short of being a full featured program. This month the navigation apps are back in the spotlight. Your decision to buy here is going to be governed by two factors. The first is a personal preference: do you prefer Raster Charts (essentially copies of the original paper charts in electronic format) or Vector Charts (layered electronic charts)? The second is budget.

iNavx (Raster charts/US$50)
This is essentially a full function chart-plotting app and is exclusive to Apple devices. The app is at the top end of the range, dollar wise, and comes with no charts. Chart packs are available through the X-Traverse website. A US$10/ annum subscription gives you access to the world but the prices are hefty for the chart bundles.
Memory Map (Raster charts/US$6.95)
Memory Map has great functionality and can also be run on your PC or Mac and synced with your mobile device (Android and Apple). It's great value and the charts are a reasonable price. The pack for the East Coast of Australia for example is $49.99US with a license for two mobile devices. Memory Map also has add-ons for AIS and Autopilot control.
iSailor (Vector charts/Free)
This is from Transas and is free to download. Chart folios can be downloaded through the app. As an example, the Chart Folio for the Australian East coast or the New Zealand folio (which includes Tonga) are $30.99US each. iSailor is a great chart plotting app with good functionality and a user-friendly layout.
Navionics (Vector charts/US $50)
The Navionics app is perhaps the best value for money. It gives you access to charts from the Indian Ocean across Australasia and most of the SW Pacific. Despite a number of upgrades though, the Navionics app is not a fully functional chart plotter but it's on its way according to the Navionics website.
Boating's verdict
If you like Raster charts then Memory Map gives you all you should need from a chart plotter at a good price. For those that prefer Vector charts, iSailor is our pick.

With the multiple charts disappearances during the successive updates of iNavX, I received a number of requests for assistance in the recovery of the said charts.
Regardless of the fact that I am not the NavX Studios LLC bracket (iNavX) (¹), a focus is needed on the method of charts provision by distributors for our mobile applications.
The mapping official publishers offer to distributors of their digital products annual global licenses for maintaining updated maps. This means that distributors pay each year a global license to all these publishers. Hence a necessary requirement to renew subscriptions by the end user.
Navionics about in-app purchases for iNavX for example, there is no chart deletion at the end of a year. As I already wrote, be aware though that maintaining expired charts on mobile is only a tolerance, absolutely no guarantee of recovering after a deletion due to a hardware problem, software, or a device change. The subscription is expected to be renewed each year to qualify for updates.

With Geogarage catalog, in Weather4D Routing & Navigation version, the principle of the subscription is clearly announced on the web page dedicated. The difference with other applications is that one subscribes, in that way, to a publisher for all regions it covers, and not to a geographic bounded region.

The charts are dated and encrypted, they will be deleted at the end of one year from date to date. However, subscribed publishers renewal will be by tacit agreement, after repeated announcements by email, unless explicit refusal of the subscriber before deadline. This ensures that, in absence of the subscriber response, the charts never be deleted during a crossing. Come ashore, if the user finds an undesired publisher renewal, it will be refunded on simple request to Geogarage.

Let us not measure the considerable number of maps provided by SHOM subscription 60 € (± 850 charts + 540 cartridges), UKHO 70 € (± 1000 charts + 800 cartridges) compared the sale price of a single paper chart : ± 30 € (SHOM), 28 € (UKHO).
